About muscle relaxants
What they treat
Muscle relaxants ease painful muscle spasm in conditions such as back and neck pain, sprains, sciatica and muscle injuries. They are used for a few days to a couple of weeks, usually together with rest, physiotherapy and a painkiller.
Why they are sold
Muscle spasm is one of the most common reasons for visiting a doctor or pharmacy, and these products sell in large volumes, alone and in fixed combinations with diclofenac, aceclofenac or paracetamol.
How they are taken
They are taken two or three times a day, at the dose the medicine and condition need. They can cause drowsiness, so patients are told not to drive, and tizanidine can lower blood pressure. Some regulators restrict or limit thiocolchicoside, for example in duration or in pregnancy, so the approved label in each country applies. Patients should always follow the approved label and the prescriber's instructions in their country.
