About bupivacaine
What it treats
Bupivacaine numbs nerves for several hours. It is used for nerve blocks, epidural anaesthesia in labour and surgery, spinal anaesthesia for caesarean section and operations on the lower body, and for pain relief after surgery. It is on the World Health Organization Model List of Essential Medicines.
Why theatres buy it
Its long action means a single dose can cover an operation and ease pain afterwards, so it is a standard in operating theatres, labour wards and pain services.
How it is given
It is injected by an anaesthetist or a trained healthcare professional, with the dose calculated by weight and the site. It is toxic to the heart and brain if injected into a blood vessel, so staff aspirate before injecting and have resuscitation equipment ready. Some strengths are not for use in obstetric epidurals, so the label's rules apply. Patients should always follow the approved label and the prescriber's instructions in their country.
