About lidocaine
What it treats
Lidocaine numbs the area where it is applied or injected. It is used for minor surgery, stitches, dental treatment, nerve blocks, and as a gel before catheters and examinations. By injection into a vein it is also used to treat some irregular heart rhythms in emergency care. It is on the World Health Organization Model List of Essential Medicines.
Why it is in every hospital
It acts within minutes, is safe at the right dose, and is cheap, so it is one of the most used medicines in the world, stocked in every ward, theatre, clinic and dental surgery.
How it is used
It is injected into the skin or around a nerve by a trained healthcare professional, with the maximum dose calculated from the patient's weight, and with or without adrenaline to prolong the effect. Too much can affect the heart and nervous system, so it must not be injected into a blood vessel by mistake. Patients should always follow the approved label and the prescriber's instructions in their country.
