About gentamicin
What it treats
Gentamicin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic used to treat serious bacterial infections, including sepsis, kidney and urinary infections, infections in the abdomen and in newborns, usually with another antibiotic. It does not work on viruses. It is on the World Health Organization Model List of Essential Medicines.
Why hospitals buy it
It acts quickly against many bacteria, is inexpensive, and has been in use for decades, so it is a standard in wards, emergency departments and newborn units, and a regular line in national tenders.
How it is given
It is given by a healthcare professional as an injection into a muscle or a vein, once a day or in divided doses by weight. It can damage the kidneys and the hearing and balance organs, especially with high doses or long courses, so treatment is kept short and kidney function and drug levels are monitored. Patients should always follow the approved label and the prescriber's instructions in their country.
