About iv fluids
What they are used for
Intravenous (IV) fluids replace water and salts lost through vomiting, diarrhoea, bleeding, burns and surgery, keep veins open, and carry other medicines into the body. Sodium chloride 0.9% (normal saline) and Ringer lactate are the most used for resuscitation, and dextrose supplies sugar and water. All are on the World Health Organization Model List of Essential Medicines.
Why hospitals and tenders buy them
They are used in every ward, theatre and emergency department, and are among the highest-volume products in national medical stores, so tenders ask for reliable supply, sterility documents and packaging that survives transport.
How they are given
They are given by a healthcare professional through a drip, with the fluid, volume and speed chosen for the patient. Too much fluid can overload the heart or alter the body's salts, so patients are monitored. Injectable medicines must be prepared and given by trained staff using sterile technique. Patients should always follow the approved label and the prescriber's instructions in their country.
