About ceftriaxone
What it treats
Ceftriaxone is a cephalosporin antibiotic used in hospitals and clinics to treat serious bacterial infections such as pneumonia, meningitis, sepsis, typhoid and gonorrhoea, and to prevent infection around surgery. It does not work on viruses. It is on the World Health Organization Model List of Essential Medicines.
Why hospitals use it
Ceftriaxone works against a wide range of bacteria, reaches the brain and spinal fluid, and stays in the body long enough to be given once a day. This makes it a standard choice for ward and emergency use, and one of the largest-volume injectable antibiotics in national medical stores and tenders.
How it is given
It is given by a healthcare professional as an injection into a muscle or a vein, after the powder is dissolved in the right fluid. The dose depends on the infection and the patient's age and weight. It must not be mixed with solutions that contain calcium, especially in newborn babies. It is not suitable for people with a severe allergy to cephalosporins or penicillins. The approved leaflet and the prescriber's instructions apply.
