The Yemeni medicines market in brief
Yemen has one of the largest humanitarian needs in the world, and much of its medicine supply is bought by international organisations, aid agencies and NGOs. Private importers and pharmacies also trade, but conditions change quickly, so we plan each shipment with the buyer and confirm routes, banking and permits before an order.
Demand is highest for antibiotics, oral rehydration salts and zinc, pain and fever medicines, antimalarials, vitamins and supplements, and chronic care medicines such as metformin and amlodipine. Cholera, malaria and malnutrition-related illness add to need, and mothers and children are a priority for most programmes.
The country has more than one administration, and authorities in different areas may set their own requirements for registration and import. A medicine bought for a programme usually follows the programme's own quality rules, which ask for the full document set, while commercial importers deal with the relevant authority for their area.

the Supreme Board registration, step by step
Most medicines for Yemen are bought by programmes that follow their own quality rules, and commercial importers register products with the relevant authority for their area. This is the usual route for a finished pharmaceutical product made abroad.
-
01
A local company applies
The buyer is an aid programme, an NGO or a licensed Yemeni importer. A commercial importer holds the registration and applies to the relevant authority, such as the Supreme Board of Drugs and Medical Appliances.
-
02
The manufacturer authorises it
The manufacturer gives the applicant a letter of authorisation that names the product and the company, which we provide.
-
03
The dossier goes in
The buyer or applicant submits the dossier with Zone IVb stability data, the WHO-format COPP, the GMP certificate and the samples. We prepare the manufacturer's documents.
-
04
the Supreme Board reviews it
The authority assesses the dossier and may ask questions, which we answer with you. A programme buyer reviews the same documents against its own quality rules.
-
05
Samples and quality checks
Samples are tested, and the authority or the programme may ask for more evidence of GMP compliance.
-
06
Registration and renewal
On approval the authority issues a registration and a registration number, which goes on every pack. A programme issues its own approval, valid for the order or contract.
Registration takes from several months to more than a year, and the Supreme Board updates its requirements from time to time, so check the current guidelines with the Supreme Board or your regulatory agent. Many importers register a few products first and add more as orders grow.

NGOs and charities
Health NGOs and charities buy for clinics and mobile health teams, often in programme packs.

Hospitals
Public and private hospitals buy in hospital packs, usually through licensed importers.

Questions about supplying Yemen
Something else? Email [email protected].
Do you export medicines to Yemen?
Yes. Progene Pharma manufactures generic medicines in a WHO-GMP certified facility and supplies them to importers, wholesalers, hospital suppliers and tender suppliers in Yemen.
Can you help us register products with the Supreme Board?
Yes. Progene Pharma prepares the documents the Supreme Board registration needs: a CTD dossier with Zone IVb stability data, the WHO-format COPP, the GMP certificate, the letter of authorisation and samples for testing. Your Yemeni company submits the application, and we answer the Supreme Board's questions with you.
Do I need a local company to register and import?
For commercial supply, yes: a medicine is registered through a licensed Yemeni importer with the relevant authority for its area. A programme buyer follows its own rules instead. Check the current requirements with the authority and your buyer.
How long does the Supreme Board registration take?
It varies by product and by how complete the dossier is, from several months to more than a year. A complete dossier with clear stability data and prompt answers to the Supreme Board's questions helps. Many importers register a few products first and add more as orders grow.
Which documents does the Supreme Board ask for?
The usual set is a CTD dossier, a COPP, a GMP certificate, stability data, a letter of authorisation, product samples and artwork. the Supreme Board updates its requirements from time to time, so confirm the current list with the Supreme Board or your regulatory agent. We tell you what we can provide with your quotation.
Do you supply aid programmes and NGOs?
Yes. We supply programme and hospital packs with the full document set that international organisations expect, including the COPP, GMP certificate and COA. Send us the programme's specification and we will confirm what we can provide.
Is it possible to ship to Yemen at the moment?
Conditions at the ports, with banks and on the roads change quickly. We confirm routes, permits and payment arrangements with the buyer before we accept an order, and we plan each shipment individually.
Who is the regulator in Yemen?
The Supreme Board of Drugs and Medical Appliances is the main regulator, but the country has more than one administration and each may set its own requirements. Check the current rules for the area you supply with your importer or your programme's procurement team.
What must the packs carry for Yemen?
English text, with Arabic where the buyer or the authority asks for it, the registration number where required, batch number, manufacture and expiry dates, storage conditions and the other details the buyer requires. We prepare the artwork and you approve a proof before printing.
Are your medicines suitable for the climate?
Yes. Products for this market are tested at 30 °C and 75% relative humidity (Zone IVb) and packed in moisture-resistant blisters or bottles, so the shelf life stays valid in hot, humid conditions.
Can you supply tenders in Yemen?
Yes. Progene Pharma supplies tender packs and the product documents tenders usually ask for, such as the COPP, GMP certificate and COA. Tell us the tender requirements and we will confirm what we can provide.
How are orders shipped to Yemen?
Progene Pharma ships by sea from Nhava Sheva (JNPT) near Mumbai to Aden, or through Djibouti for onward transport, on FOB, CFR or CIF terms. Routes and schedules change with conditions, so we confirm them with your quotation.
What is the minimum order quantity?
It depends on the product, the dosage form and the packaging. We work with large importers and tender suppliers as well as smaller distributors, and confirm the minimum quantity with your quotation.
